There are nearly 6,000 women serving as UN Peacekeepers in uniformed military, emergency and police field missions. They are based in powder keg situations in Lebanon, Darfur, South Sudan, Haiti, Kosovo and more.
Female personnel on the ground are critical to the work carried out by UN missions. They are often granted first contact in post-conflict theatres to protect women and children. They also provide role models of women's empowerment in war-torn communities.
Part of the film was shot in Jordan's Zaatari camp, home to tens of thousands of Syrian refugees, where women in uniform are often the first point of contact for families who have lost almost everything. Filming in a camp under the oversight of the Jordanian military means every movement is planned and permitted in advance, so producer Chloe Ross and I worked to a tight schedule. I kept a small footprint with the Sony FS5, and where permission allowed, the drone showed the sheer scale of the camp, row upon row of shelters stretching to the horizon.
