How did one of the world's most beautiful cities go from holiday destination to hellhole?
This special Spotlight investigation by David Woiwod takes you to San Francisco to meet the Aussies turning lives around in a city where crime is out of control and people are living in squalor, and who say what is happening there should be a warning for Australia.
Filming in the parts of the city that have become no-go zones demanded a different kind of awareness. Every set-up on the street was a negotiation, with people in the grip of fentanyl addiction who did not always want to be seen, and others who very much did. I kept the kit light: the Sony FX6 on the Fujinon MK zooms for the main coverage, and the A7S III for the moments where a bigger camera would have changed the scene. Shooting S-Log3 gave me room in the grade to hold detail in the harsh contrast between the postcard skyline and the reality just a few blocks away.
