The Boeing 737 is regarded as one of the world's safest and most widely used aircraft, but faith in the manufacturer was rocked when Boeing introduced the updated 737 MAX. Two brand new planes dropped out of the sky, killing more than 300 people, and the new model was grounded worldwide.
Lengthy investigations found the plane was safe to fly, but 7.30 has compiled dozens of mid-air safety incidents, and now a former Boeing insider is going public with startling claims. This exclusive report is from Kathryn Diss and producer John Stewart of ABC Investigations.
The story was filmed in Washington State and Massachusetts, and much of it rested on a single long-form interview with that former insider. Whistleblower interviews carry a particular weight. The contributor is taking a professional and personal risk by going on the record, so the set-up has to feel calm, unhurried and controlled. I shot on the Sony F55 with the Fujinon XK20-120 Cabrio, which let me reframe between a wide and a tight single without interrupting the flow of the conversation, while Kathryn worked through the detail of each safety incident.
